Things to do in Panama

Parallel to the development of the Baha’i community around the world, Baha’i Houses of Worship have been established in each continent. During the 19th and 20th centuries, eight Temples were erected— in Turkmenistan, the United States, Uganda, Australia, Germany, Panama, Western Samoa, and India— pending only the construction of a House of Worship in South America. In the 1950s, plans were made to locate that temple in Chile.

The long-awaited process leading to the construction of the Temple began in 2001. Construction concluded in 2016 thereby culminating the era of the continental Baha’i Houses of Worship.

Alongside the central structure of the House of Worship, which is dedicated to prayer and the remembrance of God, various dependencies dedicated to social, humanitarian, educational, and scientific activities will gradually be established for the benefit and wellbeing of society. Now that the construction of the continental Temples has concluded, first steps are being taken to establish local and national Houses of Worship in various localities around the world.

The Baha’i Houses of Worship reflects a vision of a society where effort made in unison can bear fruit, both materially and spiritually. For this vision to materialize and maintain itself, it is necessary to nurture a gradual process of individual and collective transformation in which every person develops spiritual and intellectual capacities, whereas in a society we learn to incorporate new patterns of collective life in which collaboration and service to others are paramount.

In the closing decades of the twentieth century, diverse initiatives were begun, seeking to express Baha’i teachings in action that would contribute to the advancement of society. The Ruhi Institute in Colombia, created in the early 1970s to develop an educational program based upon the principle of community service, is a highlight among these efforts. The results of this initiative prompted other countries in the region to implement it, and it has evolved into a series of materials currently used in almost every country in the world.

In Chile, several programs and activities have been developed, in parallel to the construction of the House of Worship, to bring about vibrant community action, including a Spiritual Education Program for Children, the Junior Youth Spiritual Empowerment Program, and a Training Program for Service. These programs are offered in many communities throughout the country and are carried out in diverse spaces, including schools, community centers, and homes.
